Do you love movies? Have you ever wanted to learn how to make a film of your own? In this class, students will get to put their creativity to work to direct, produce, and edit a short, 5-shot film of their own! Students will learn all aspects of the filmmaking process, and have lots of fun while doing it! No prior film-making experience required-- just remember to bring enthusiasm, humor and excitement. E403: Building a Computer

Ever wanted to build a computer? In this class, we'll take apart a desktop computer and see what's inside. I'll show you each part of the computer and how it contributes to the overall system. Then, we'll put the parts back together and see how everything works in unison.


Prerequisites
Basic computer knowledge - (What's a hard drive? What's a CPU?) While I will be showing each item individually, I won't be explaining the functions of the more common components in depth.

H408: History of the Modern Middle East

What is the Middle East? Why is it always shown in the news as a war-zone? Why is it important to us in America today? To answer to these questions, we will be looking at the history of the Middle East over the 20th century. This course is a survey of over 80 years of history that should help you understand the dynamics acting in the Middle East today.

We will look at the fallout from world war one and the division of the Middle East between France and England, and the formation of the Arabian and Turkish states. Next we will look at the Egyptian revolution and the rise of "pan-arabism." We will then look at the rise of the booming gulf state economies and the American gulf wars. We will end talking about the 2011 revolutions that swept across the Middle East and the future of the region.

No former knowledge of the Middle East is necessary. Come with questions!!

This course will provide an expansive survey of contemporary american political issues. We will touch upon the major philosophical, social, economic, and other themes that are relevant to contemporary politics.

Let's look at the historical significance of faith, religion, and God. Why does it matter? If you love to seek truth as I, it is important to know where certain ideas come from and reasons for why they are accepted, regardless of their levels of rationality.

Whether you are a believer or non-believer, bring some of your most difficult questions and doubts to the table, things no one allows you ask, or reasons for why you don't / do believe. This is to be an inclusive, respectful, and non-judgmental lesson on how to which is not always available for purposes such as this. Finally, here is an open dialogue session to simply ask, "What?," "Why?," and "How?" Also, learn about resources to help you continue this dialogue elsewhere, as well as career opportunities.

S411: Let's Talk STEM

Know what STEM stands for? Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math! For this class, we will be engaging with the sciences, particularly the biological sciences. Biology is the study of life, which can be fun and sometimes, even edible! We'll talk about how bacteria communicate and build our own models of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), the very building blocks that give diversity to life. Especially if you don't think you've got the "knack" for science, this class welcomes you! Come meet Amherst students who study in the STEM fields who are excited to meet younger generations of scientists-to-be!

S398: The Brain, Health, and Exercise

Ever notice that when you're active for a long time, you suddenly feel this overwhelming desire to stop? All these signals come from you brain! What about that really good feeling you get right after you stop exercising? Also the brain! Our brain helps us to mediate how we feel about exercise and the body and the brain talk to each other. Take this class if you desire to know more about how the the brain talks to the active body! We'll take a look at a number of different things that happens to the brain when we exercise!

Are you interested in stuff? Did you know that basically all stuff is built out of carbon? Did you not know that but want to find out why? Come to "A World of Carbon!" In this class we will be talking about all the cool things carbon can do, and why it comprises the building blocks of the world. No former chemistry experience is required. There will be awesome 3D models of molecules for you to look at and play with! By the end of the hour you will have a general understanding of what "organic chemistry" is and why it's something fun to think about. Hope to see you there!

S393: An Introduction to Special and General Relativity

Albert Einstein's theories of special and general relativity, published at the beginning of the 20th century, immediately created a new area of study in physics and provided neat explanations for a number of previously inexplicable physical phenomena. Still today, the ramifications of these theories are being extensively researched and experimentally tested, and are a central pillar of modern physical theories. In this class we will give an overview of some of the qualitative and quantitative predictions of both theories, and show students the exciting but highly counter-intuitive ideas that are central to how we think about the universe around us.

These logic puzzles involve placing the digits 1 to 9 into the cells so that they add up to the appropriate numbers. Kakuro is easy to pick up and hard to put down!

For more experienced Kakuro players, we will have more challenging Kakuro puzzles for us to enjoy together :-)
